Ready to have some island fun, but short on cash? Get to the Virgin Islands this summer and check out these budget-friendly activities that won’t break the bank.
Waterlemon Cay
Secluded and lovely, Waterlemon Cay is a top Virgin Islands destination for snorkeling. Scope out the brilliantly colored starfish, squid, parrotfish, coral, stingray, sea urchins, and turtles, just off the beach. And be sure to bring proper shoes for the hike in. Or, just take a boat directly to the superb snorkeling.
Listen to the Sounds of the Islands
Check out Steel Pan Fridays at Emerald Beach Resort, and soak in the distinctly Caribbean sound of steel pan drums and calypso.
Beat the Heat at a Fresh Juice Smoothie Stand
Get a fresh fruit smoothie and sip on tropical flavors like banana, passion fruit, and mango. Try Our Market Smoothies in Cruz Bay, a local place that has been known to split open a fresh coconut and let guests drink from a straw. Plus, they’re willing to add in rum to take it up a notch.
Participate in a Pirate-Themed Murder Mystery this Summer
Get into the spirit of the islands with The Curse of the Trompeuse Treasure, a pirate-themed Whodunnit Murder Mystery. It’ll take place on Sunday, June 10th at 4 pm at Pistarckle Theater in St. Thomas. Seating is limited, so get your tickets early.
Play in Maho Bay
Kick back and relax in the shade of the mangrove trees lining the shore. Or, take a stroll down the white sandy beach. Be sure to check out the numerous turtles swimming in the bay. Maho Bay’s shallow entry water is sheltered by surrounding reefs, making it a great place to wade with kids, or roam with a drink in hand.
Sample an Island Delicacy
Try a bowl of Callaloo soup, a thick stew of okra and meats ranging from smoked pigtail to salt beef or crab. Get your own: Take a boat over to Miss Lucy’s Restaurant in Coral Bay, St. John, where you can eat right on the bay, while local chickens wander up to your table.
Little Lameshur
Positioned just off the beaten path, Little Lameshur is a hidden gem. Take a Jeep over the deep ruts or charter a boat to get to this beautiful beach. The beach is peaceful and fairly isolated, and the water is clear and calm here. Whether you have young kids and want a nice spot for the family to enjoy, or you want to escape the crowds and soak in the solitude, Little Lameshur is the place to be. Pack a picnic, bring plenty of sunscreen, and just let time escape you.
